Carnival Week 30 June - 6 July 2013.

The Lions Club of Liskeard Carnival Week gets under way on Sunday 30th June, with a wide range of events planned. We need the support of the town’s residents and organisations to help us build on the success of these events, by taking part and supporting us.

Below is a summary of events. By publicising these early we hope you will be able to add them to your diary and will be able to join us.

Carnival Royalty – applications invited

Closing date for applications 1st June

Ages from 6 to 12 years

We will provide the float and outfits for the Carnival Royalty at Liskeard Carnival and any other Carnivals in the surrounding area. It is imperative the Parents/Guardians are willing to support the winners throughout the carnival season.

Tel Angie on 01579 346707 or 07811318995

Music in the Park - Sunday 30th June

Local bands and musicians, playing music of interest to all age groups, will be providing the entertainment in Westbourne Gardens. In the past this has been a very pleasant afternoon with people bringing along picnics and drinks and just chilling out. We need groups, bands and singers who can offer us a 45 minute session.

Pavement Artists - Tuesday 2nd July

An evening event for children. The youngsters are divided into different age categories and there are prizes for the best pictures. Chalks and chalkboards will be provided. There is no entry fee.

Bingo – Tuesday 2nd July

To be held in the Public Hall

Furry Dance – Wednesday 3rd July

The number of people taking part in the Floral Dance has dwindled over the last few years. This is a traditional Cornish dance that needs to be revitalised. We would like people from many of the local organisations to come along and dance through the town and have some fun - the steps are not hard and there are people who will teach them on the day. Fancy dress is optional, there are awards for the best adults and children’s entries and a small entry fee.

Challenge Night - Thursday 4th July

A number of challenging games, some mental and some physical and some you just have to find out about on the night. To take place at the Eliot House Hotel. Teams of four to six. Small entry fee £5.

General Knowledge Quiz - Friday 5th July

Taking place in the Public Hall. You may enter teams comprising of 4-6 members with a small prize for the winning team. There will be a bar.£5 per team

Carnival Procession - Saturday 6th July

The main event of the week. There are classes for floats, walkers, groups and individual and all are welcome.

We may be able to help you find transport for your float.

To host these events costs the Lions a considerable amount, in insurance, band costs for the procession, prizes etc. How do we pay for it, well each year we walk around with buckets and collect money from the crowds and ask local businesses to advertise in the carnival newspaper, which is delivered to 6,000 homes around Liskeard and the surrounding villages.

If you as an individual or a group would like to take part in any of these events and need further information please contact me. Tel 01579 342604 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Also throughout the week we will be running the Deliberate Mistake in the shop window competition.

Some Pictures from last year

Pavement Artist

Because of bad weather we held the Pavement Artists in the Public Hall.

We had some fantastic entries and there are plenty of budding artists in Liskeard.

The Mayor Tony Powell judged the competition.

Furry Dance

The weather held off and we managed to dance our way around the streets, with a film crew and Mary Portas in tow.

Liskeard Lions Carnival

After many fears about the weather, the rain held off for the carnival procession.
